For questions that can be answered yes or no, raise your eyebrows, open your eyes a bit, and lean your head forward slightly.

ASL signer using raised eyebrows for a yes or no question

Learn It

Start with the simple version, then practice it with real signs.

Yes/no questions are also called polar questions. That just means the answer can be yes or no.

Use raised eyebrows, wider eyes, and a slight forward head tilt.

Hold that face through the question, not just on the last sign.

Try It

Practice slowly. Make the face before the sentence is over.

  1. Ask YOU LIKE PIZZA? with raised eyebrows.
  2. Ask YOU FINISH HOMEWORK? with raised eyebrows held through the whole question.
  3. Answer your own questions with YES or NO so the pattern feels complete.

Simple Examples

Read the ASL line first, then check the meaning and face cue.

YOU LIKE PIZZA?Do you like pizza?Raised eyebrows show the answer should be yes or no.
TOMORROW SCHOOL?Is there school tomorrow? The time sign can come first, but the yes/no face still stays on.

Common Mistake

Do not furrow your eyebrows for a yes/no question. Furrowed eyebrows usually point toward a WH question.

Deeper Note

A little more grammar

The PDF explains that raised eyebrows can mark the whole question as an inquiry. This is why the expression should spread over the question instead of appearing as a quick afterthought.
