CL:L for Rectangles and Frames

CL:L can show corners, cards, rectangles, picture frames, and some tool-like shapes.

ASL signer showing an L handshape for a frame or rectangle

Learn It

Start with the simple version, then practice it with real signs.

CL:L uses the thumb and index finger at a right angle. It can show a corner, a rectangular object, or a frame.

Use it after naming things like PICTURE, CARD, ENVELOPE, MIRROR, or FRAME.

The way you place and turn the L handshape can show where the rectangle is and how it faces.

CornerThe right angle can mark one corner of a rectangular object.
FrameUse two L hands or repeated placement to show a picture or mirror frame.
OrientationTurn the hand to show whether the object faces up, forward, or sideways.

Try It

Practice slowly. Make the classifier movement clear and keep the location steady.

  1. Sign PICTURE, then use CL:L to place a picture on the wall.
  2. Sign CARD, then use CL:L to show a card lying flat on a table.
  3. Use two CL:L hands to outline the corners of a frame.

Simple Examples

Read the ASL line first. A dark green pill explains the classifier movement, not an extra sign.

ASL linePICTURE,CL:L on-wall.
MeaningA picture is on the wall.
TipThe L handshape helps show a rectangular frame.
Classifier movementon-wallPlace CL:L on the wall spot and hold it there.
ASL lineCARD,CL:L table.
MeaningA card is on the table.
TipPlace the L flat to show the card location.
Classifier movementtableTurn CL:L flat and place it on the table spot.
ASL lineMIRROR,two CL:L frame.
MeaningThe mirror has a frame.
TipTwo hands can show opposite corners.
Classifier movementframeHold two CL:L hands as opposite corners of the frame.

Common Mistake

Do not use CL:L when a simpler flat surface is the main point. CL:B may be better for broad flat surfaces.

Deeper Note

A little more grammar

CL:L is especially helpful when the edge, corner, or facing direction matters. It gives more shape detail than a plain flat hand.
