CL:5 for Crowds and Elements
CL:5 can show many things together, like a crowd, forest, wind, waves, smoke, or spreading movement.

Learn It
Start with the simple version, then practice it with real signs.
CL:5 uses an open hand with all five fingers spread. It often shows many things or something spread out.
Wiggling or moving the fingers can show a crowd moving, wind blowing, waves rolling, smoke rising, or water spreading.
The face and movement help show whether the action is gentle, strong, fast, or overwhelming.
Try It
Practice slowly. Make the classifier movement clear and keep the location steady.
- Sign PEOPLE MANY, then wiggle CL:5 to show a crowd moving.
- Sign WIND, then sweep both CL:5 hands sideways to show wind blowing.
- Sign WATER, then move CL:5 outward to show water spreading.
Simple Examples
Read the ASL line first. A dark green pill explains the classifier movement, not an extra sign.
PEOPLE MANY,CL:5 crowd-move.WIND,CL:5 blow-across.WATER,CL:5 spread-out.Common Mistake
Do not use CL:5 for one clear object. It usually works best for many things, spread-out things, or natural elements.
A little more grammar
CL:5 can show quantity and motion at the same time. The handshape gives the idea of many or spread-out, while the movement shows what the group or element is doing.
