Is there a difference between 'none' and 'nothing' in ASL?
They are very closely related and often use the exact same sign (the two 'O' hands moving apart). However, 'nothing' has a few other common variations, such as shaking a single 'O' hand under the chin, whereas 'none' almost always uses this two-handed outward motion.
Can I sign 'none' with just one hand?
It is best to use both hands. While a fluent signer might casually use one hand in rapid conversation, the standard and clearest way to sign 'none' requires both hands moving apart to fully convey the concept of emptiness.
Do I need to mouth the word 'none'?
You don't need to mouth the English word. Instead, focus on the ASL non-manual marker: a slight head shake. Some signers may also slightly purse their lips or blow out a tiny puff of air to emphasize that there is absolutely nothing left.
