If-Then Sentences

In ASL, the raised eyebrows on the if part can do a lot of the grammar work. Then the face relaxes for the result.

ASL signer using raised eyebrows for the if part of a sentence

Learn It

Start with the simple version, then practice it with real signs.

An if-then sentence has two parts: the condition and the result.

Raise your eyebrows during the condition, such as IF RAIN TOMORROW.

Pause, relax your brows, and sign the result. A small head nod can help show the result is complete.

Try It

Practice slowly. Make the face before the sentence is over.

  1. Sign with raised brows, pause, then .
  2. Sign with raised brows, pause, then .
  3. Practice dropping the brow raise at the pause so the result does not look like another setup.

Simple Examples

Read the ASL line first, then check the meaning and tip.

ASL line , .
MeaningIf it rains tomorrow, the game will be canceled.
TipRaised brows stay on the if part.
ASL line , .
MeaningIf you finish, we will go.
TipThe result comes after the pause with a more neutral face.

Common Mistake

Do not hold the raised eyebrows through the whole sentence. The if part and the result need to feel separate.

Deeper Note

A little more grammar

The PDF calls the if part the antecedent and the then part the consequent. In learner terms, mark the setup with raised brows, then return to neutral for what happens next.
